Our first meeting of 2015 was superb. We had a lot of fun learning how to use willow to make holders for fat balls to feed the birds.
Here we see the willow reeds threaded through a template to keep them apart. Next comes tying the reeds above Pat's hand to keep them together. The laughter threatened to totally disrupt the class as time and again first one tie then another popped out. To make it easier to tie those wanton, wandering branches we used plastic ties to keep them together then the plastic tie was cut away.
Mike concentrated hard with good results.
Senga decided to use contrasting colour which looked good.
Ciona watched carefully as Rob demonstrated the next step.
Here he is showing how to start the reeds which will be threaded in spiral fashion from this part up to the tie above.
The spiral holds the reeds together to make a very efficient carrier for fat balls. We had to get rid of the template and turn in the pieces below the template to give a nice finish to what was the top of the cone. The addition of a handle gave us a handle for hanging the fat ball holder to a tree or shrub branch. As we left to go home the clock was turned back to memories of school days when we were allowed to take our handwork home to be admired by the family and friends. Rob was a great teacher and this was a wonderful project to do.
